The word “affirm” in this scripture is talking about the confirmation or declaration that we are set apart for God. God has called us His, and His plans for us have been made a sure thing; they are destined to be completed. In another version of this scripture it says that God “…gave His Spirit as a down payment in our hearts.” Normally when you make a down payment on something it means that there is more to come. For example, when you buy a car there is a down payment and monthly payments are required until that debt is paid in full. When we line up our words with God’s Word, we receive His Spirit as His eternal pledge to complete every good work in our lives. This is our down payment: The presence of God! By pouring His Spirit into us, God is promising to continue to add more of Himself into our lives until our time on earth is complete and we receive eternal life in Heaven. After we receive His Spirit, we can be sure that we will never be without the fullness of His presence.
