In Spirit and in Truth

Day 09

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

– John 4:23-24

In this passage of Scripture, Jesus was talking to the woman at the well. He was sharing with her who He was and why He was there. It was a moment in which Jesus was able to share with her what it means to truly worship God. Jesus alluded to the fact that He would break the barrier that was set in place as it was prophesied. The position we are in because of the Blood of Jesus is one of freedom. We are able to come into the presence of God at any moment, for any reason, and for any length of time. We are not limited to a time constraint or required to worship in a specific location. The only stipulation that we have is the posture of our heart. Through this conversation Jesus had with the woman at the well, we see what God is looking for. He wants His people to worship in Spirit and in truth.

In this passage, “Spirit” refers to the Holy Spirit. When we are worshiping, the spiritual part of us should be open and influenced by the Holy Spirit. “Truth” is referring to a state of mind that is free from pretense, falsehoods, or deceit. Worship is simply coming into the presence of God just to worship Him. We worship in Spirit and in truth when we bring all that we are into God’s presence and glorify Him. God doesn’t require that we have a perfect life, He simply wants us to enter His presence with a heart set on Him. That is worshiping in Spirit and in truth. That is what God is looking for from us.
