The Watercourse

Day 20

“The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it whichever way He wishes. Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, But the Lord weighs and examines the hearts [of people and their motives].”

– Proverbs 21:1-2

If your heart is in God’s hands, He can direct you like a watercourse. “What’s a watercourse?” you may ask. It’s a brook, stream, or artificially constructed water channel. Water doesn’t change its route on its own because it is submitted to the channel it is in. In our spiritual lives, we need to be fully surrendered to God’s will and not dig out our own waterbed according to our flesh. Galatians 1:6 says, “I am astonished and extremely irritated that you are so quickly shifting your allegiance and deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different [even contrary] gospel.” We can become spiritual renegades when we turn away from God’s will and adopt another way of living that’s not according to the Word of God. Proverbs 30:18-19 says, “There are three things which are too astounding and unexpectedly wonderful for me, four which I do not understand: The way of an eagle in the air, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man with a maid.”

We do not always understand God’s ways or track for us, but if we trust Him with each turn He will never lead us down the wrong path. The water of our lives may be crashing or slow and quiet, but it is always moving forward when God is directing our course. His channel does not break, give way, or leak; it holds. It will always sustain you. Your Heavenly Father is always there to hold up your arms, ease your yoke, and lift you up from stumbling. He takes you in His arms. He does not drive you with force into His will, but instead drapes you with love and gentleness.

Confession for today: “Holy Spirit help me to allow you to direct my life like a watercourse that leads to your will and peace for my life!”
